Relocating to Ireland

Relocating to Ireland, is a choice taken by more and more people every year. The best advice we can give you is to make sure you plan and prepare for the move, to ensure you are prepared for everything that can happen.

There are a few things to note, for example that not all electrical appliances can be used here. Mains electricity is supplied at 220 Volts (50 cycles per second). Plugs are flat with three pins. You need an adapter to convert to the correct plus size and a transformer to convert American appliances (except for dual-voltage equipment, which only needs an adapter). Certain appliances, such as electrical clocks, will not work even with a transformer.

When choosing a shipping company for relocating to Ireland, make sure it is one with a good reputation and reviews online. Study their terms and conditions in detail, including their loss and damage cover. You must insure your shipment and, as with selecting a shipping company, it is worth shopping around for the best value in insurance, though this is not always the least expensive. Obviously you need to take into account how long the shipment will take when relocating to Ireland, what you need straight away and what you can discard before you leave. If you are travelling with children, it is a good idea to bring some of their favourite toys with you when relocating to Ireland, rather than leaving everything to a surface shipment.

One family who previously went through the process of Relocating to Ireland gave their topr 4 tips on the subject matter:

Top tip #1 - Get a relocation agent in Ireland

Use this agent to sort all these things out for you (e.g., furnished apartment, car, I have to establish an office, obtain broadband access) as you'll have no credit or time to establish it here in Ireland. They can help you sort these things out quickly. This can save you a lot of hastle when Relocating to Ireland.

Top tip #2 - Leave/sell all your US electrical items

Check whether your electrical items will function in Ireland before travelling, and sell the items that will not work before coming to Ireland and replace what you need here.

Top tip #3 - Only bring essential clothing

and buy the rest in Ireland. As the weather in Ireland is quite unique, its possible that the clothes you have will not prepare you for the clothes you'll need in Ireland for either weather or for purposes of style. Even things like shoes can be different and mark you out as a foreigner who doesn't understand the weather or style.

Top tip #4 - Make a project plan

While Relocating to Ireland, expect ther are going to be many things going on all at once. Make lists and dates and know who's going to do them. Work your plan and keep it up to date! This will help you vitally with getting through the transition as quickly and painlessly as possible whilst reducing the amount of stress over so many things happening at the same time.
